Building an SAP Career – Inspiring Beginners

This post is to inspire those who are standing just behind the yellow line of the race to acquire jobs, curiously waiting to mark their presence on the corporate world.

Graduates from India are very curious to know about SAP & How to build an Career in SAP. The intent is to inspire such upcoming graduates from this post.

SAP  (Systems, Applications & Products in Data Processing) is a German multinational software corporation that makes enterprise software to manage business operations and customer relations. SAP is headquartered in Walldorf, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with regional offices in 130 countries.The company has over 293,500 customers in 190 countries

As a first step you (you means graduates) need to first choose a role that you are passionate about, following are most known roles at entry levels for graduates:

  • Functional Consultant : Functional Consultant is a role which demands from you to be well versed by the business processes of the customer business could be sales, production planning, manufacturing, maintenance, finance accounting, costing… however when you are fresher it is not expected from you to be aware of these processes, you need to have the curiosity of learning more about customers business processes. For each of these high levels process SAP has modules called as SAP Sales & Distribution (SD), SAP Material Management, SAP Production Planning (PP), SAP Plant Maintenance (PM), SAP Finance (FI) & Costing & controlling (CO) etc.. these are high level modules… SAP has a whole lot of modules which are industry specific as well as platform specific as well. Functional consultants role best suites to those graduates who have had 6+ months of industry training, which gives me learning around organisation processes.
  • Development Consultant: Development consultant is a role which demand from you to be aware of various aspects of ABAP programming language. Now a days new technologies such as Hybris, Fiori, UI5 also required. However it entirely depends on you to select which one you want to develop your skills.
  • Test Consultant: Test Consultants is a role which demands from you to be aware of test tools such as HPQC, BPT, QTP, Sprinter, IBM rational & eCATT in SAP.

Once you have selected your role the time is for you to learn & groom yourself on the skills required to take up the role.
